Elon Musk and OpenAI: The Story Behind the Feud

 In 2015, one of the most powerful tech leaders in the world, Elon Musk, was instrumental in helping to co-found OpenAI. The concept—developing artificial intelligence responsibly and for the good of humanity—was straightforward yet ambitious. OpenAI was founded at the time as a nonprofit organization to challenge big tech's hegemony in AI research.

But in 2019, when OpenAI became a for-profit business, things began to change. Musk was not pleased with this action, which was taken to draw in funding and expand its AI research. He openly attacked OpenAI, saying it had deviated from its initial goal and was now more concerned with profit than with the safe development of AI.

In 2024, the tension escalated into a court case. Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing its president Greg Brockman and CEO Sam Altman of putting financial gain ahead of AI security. He later dropped the lawsuit, only to revive it in August, this time adding Microsoft to the list of defendants. Musk said OpenAI, which now had close ties to Microsoft, was no longer acting in the public interest and had turned into just another AI powerhouse controlled by corporations.

Musk responded by taking matters into his own hands and establishing xAI, a direct rival of OpenAI, in 2023. His new AI business took off right away, especially after the Grok-3 model was released. Then, in the beginning of 2025, Musk and a group of investors took a surprising step by making an enormous $97.4 billion offer to buy OpenAI. However, the bid was flatly rejected by OpenAI's leadership, including Chairman Bret Taylor, who viewed it as an attempt to disrupt the market rather than a sincere attempt to help shape AI's future.

A larger discussion in the AI community is reflected in the ongoing struggle between Musk and OpenAI: Should the development of AI be dominated by a small number of powerful individuals, or should it continue to be open and available to everyone? OpenAI insists that its current course is required to develop AI responsibly, while Musk persists in advocating for what he believes to be a safer and more moral approach.
