On Friday, an avalanche struck a highway expansion site near India's border with Tibet in the state of Uttarakhand. An avalanche covered 57 workers with snow at Mana Pass where they were expanding the highway. Rescue operations have thus far rescued 32 workers; three of them have injuries and are being relocated to a military hospital.25 workers are unaccounted for. The rescue operations, initiated by the national disaster response force, are under strain because of inclement weather. The area is susceptible to natural disasters such as avalanches and floods, partly because of global warming. In 2022, 27 trainee mountaineers lost their lives in an avalanche in the same location, while in 2021, a burst glacier claimed more than 200 lives.
